We are finally on the other side of an intense phase of acute symptoms for my daughter. Having had a few days to reflect, I want to share some things that stood out for me about moving through acute symptoms with homeopathy. And some things about the healing – and caregiving – process.

Maybe these reflections and reminders will be helpful for you, too.

Get support.

I’m all about taking charge of our family’s health. I’m all about feeling empowered to support our kiddos (and ourselves) with homeopathy at home. AND, it can be hard to be “Dr. Mom.” We are so emotionally invested in our child, that it can be difficult to be an unbiased observer of the symptoms (which is helpful when selecting a homeopathic remedy).

I intentionally surround myself with practitioners who I trust and feel aligned with so that it’s not all on me all the time. It’s not a failure to reach out to these folks for ideas, support, and direction. I did…multiple times.

Trust your intuition.

When my daughter’s respiratory symptoms got stuck, I knew it. Her cough sounded different than any other cough she had this fall (and she’s had a few).

While my kids rarely go to the doctor for an acute illness, I happily took her to our integrative pediatrician who confirmed my feeling. She had viral induced bronchospasms.

Use discernment.

We need to discern WHEN and HOW to intervene.

I’d been pretty inconsistent with remedies and supplements up to that point, BECAUSE when a body is moving smoothly through the healing response, our interventions (homeopathic or otherwise) may muddy the waters. Remember: symptoms ARE healing, the evidence that the body is responding to a disturbance that already happened.

I discerned WHEN to intervene based on how she was moving through the symptoms, her tolerance of the symptoms, and on her personal history.

One could argue that, had I been more consistent with remedies early on, her symptoms would not have gotten stuck. Certainly, if this had been my son at age two, I’d have been ON IT early, because he often wheezed with viruses. But that was not the case for my daughter.

I still and always decide WHEN to intervene based on the individual (history, movement through symptoms, tolerance of symptoms…).

And once her symptoms clearly needed support, we had to discern HOW to give that support. After chatting with our doc and our homeopath, we decided to wait on a suppressive pharmaceutical (she was not in crisis) so I could be more consistent with remedies and supplemental support.

Three days later, after some mild improvement, symptoms regressed again, and we made a mindful choice to suppress with a single dose of the pharmaceutical WHILE we continued remedies.

Here’s what happened after the suppression (and what to remember)...

Don’t abandon homeopathy when symptoms get stuck.

If symptoms are stuck, the vital force really needs a nudge from the right remedy. It needs strengthening, maybe even more so if pharmaceuticals are in the mix. Remedies are still important and valuable.

I’m still not sure if the drugs helped, because she didn’t respond clearly or immediately as my son always did. But I started a new remedy that night, and after the third dose of that remedy, I noticed gradual improvements that did not regress. No more meds needed.

Give yourself grace.

As I considered why / how it got to this point (as a mom who is also a homeopath is likely to do), I realized there were probably some obstacles to cure (like not getting enough rest). Also, appreciation to our homeopath for reminding me of this.

Progress often regresses when we push up against obstacles (or have unmet needs).

Also, the right remedy can be hard to land on when you don’t have any modalities to work with. It can also be a challenge when the symptoms are serving a deeper energetic purpose (which is a harder one to sort out when it’s your kiddo).

Sometimes, there’s just a lot going on.

Watch for direction of cure and know what to look for.

When her cough improved, her sinuses got worse. Symptoms went from more vital organs to less vital organs. She actually felt worse with the full sinuses than she did with cough, but I knew she was healing because I know direction of cure.

Healing happens from more vital organs to less vital organs, from within out, from above to below, and in reverse order of appearance of symptoms.

Finally, have your Cocculus on hand.

If you lose sleep or experience other symptoms (especially nervous system symptoms) as a result of nursing sick ones, try Cocculus. It always supports me in moving through when my own symptoms get stuck after a lot of lost sleep.
